CHARACTER INFORMATION

NAME: Chun-li Zhiang
CANON: Street Fighter
CANON REFERENCE: Wikia article. She has an actual wikipedia article, but it wastes three paragraphs citing articles about how physically attractive she is, so I'd rather not give it clicks.
AGE: Chun-li's canon age is something of an ambiguous point. Her physically active and healthy lifestyle, of course, lends itself to a perpetually youthful appearance. However, recent games suggest she's at least 40. Given this is an AU, I'll hit the middle ground between and have her at 35
GENDER: Female
YEAR IN SCHOOL/FACULTY POSITION: Specialized trainer for X-teams and their candidates. Adjuct Faculty.
APPEARANCE: Her appearance is pretty iconic...

PERSONALITY: The primary and most visible aspect of Chun-li's personality in canon is her sense of dedication and justice. Chun-li has very strict view of right and wrong, falling into the traditional Lawful Good alignment. This isn't necessarily just from her career as a police officer, but also ideals instilled in her by her father, one of the most key figures in her life. Her morality is a guiding force for her, factoring into most of her major decisions. And while she mostly fits the Lawful Good archetype, there are times when her morals lead her contrary to the law (in Alpha 3, she helps Guile and Charlie with a mission that runs against their direct orders). But for the most part, to her, right and wrong are very clear matters.

Chun-li did not achieve her position life based on her father's connections alone, however. She worked just as hard, if not harder, than all of her peers. She has a resourcefulness and competence in her work that is second to none. On the field, she makes lightning fast assessments and decisions that prove to be both correct and highly effective at a significant rate. This has lead her to command an air of respect in her field that is largely unquestioned, allowing her freedom of operations rarely afforded to any officer. She is highly trusted to get the job done, and she rewards that trust.

Of course Chun-li isn't all about the shield. She has a kindness and compassion that guides her as well. She is especially fond of children, adopting several in her later life in the series. Her entire involvement in Third Strike was due to one of her adopted daughters being kidnapped by the psychotic Urien. She also found it within herself to forgive Cammy White, her best friend and closest companion, for her actions as Bison's "Killer Bee" operative, including the murder of her father. Chun-li is very much guided by her heart, perhaps even more so than her respect of justice.

That being said, Chun-li does have a competitive streak, an almost required trait of anyone participating in the world of fighting games. She has a deserving ego over her own strength, calling herself the Strongest Woman in the World, and having absolute faith in her ability to overpower opponents. She doesn't take defeat well, and even in friendly rivalries she gets a bit aggressive about winning. This desire to prove herself was fostered in her early career, with far more being expected of her than other cadets. Given she was both a woman and the daughter of Inspector Dorai Zhiang, she was put into a position where simply winning would not be enough to impress her superiors. She had to dominate.

And this leads to a last aspect that has to be mentioned. Chun-li is prone to restlessness. She cannot simply stand back and let things happen. She can't simply leave things to other, but instead is only satisfied if she has an active hand in the things she cares about. During her brief retirement between Street Fighter II and The Ties That Bind, she was incredibly listless and anxious, and practically leapt at the chance to return to active duty and help Guile and Cammy pursue the activities of S.I.N. and the disappearance of M. Bison. Even her rival Juri Han points out, though as a means of taunting her, that Chun-li still carries a lot of violence in her heart that cannot simply rest.

POWERS/ABILITIES: Chun-li's mutation allows her remarkable control over kinetic energy. Unlike say Gambit or Bridget's powers, Chun-li's control over kinetic energy largely has to do with using the energy of objects already in motion and increasing it significantly. This can be herself, any object she is touching, or even the literal air around her. This allows Chun-li to achieve superhuman feats of speed and strength, as well as the ability to convert the air around her into huge energy blasts, stationary (stronger) or projectile (weaker). She can kick so fast the eye body literally cannot differentiate between individual kicks, a recipient of her famous 'lightning kick' feeling as if they are being kicked by multiple feet at once. Her strength allows her to lift 300-400 pounds easily, and upwards to half a ton with effort. All of these abilities combined helped her earn her 'super cop' reputation.

AU HISTORY: Chun-li is the daughter of Inspector Dorai Zhiang. Dorai was, prior to his death, one of the most respected officers of the Ministry of Public Security in the People's Republic of China. His work cleaning up the syndicates in and out of China was renowned worldwide, and Chun-li absolutely idolized him. Well, among other personal heroes, of course, such as Bruce Lee, Rikidozan, and Jackie Sato. But for the most part, her life was guided by her father. She enrolled as a cadet into the Ministry of Public Security at the young age of 18 and quickly rose through the ranks. One of the reasons she seemed to do so much better than her peers, at least in terms of physical matters, was becoming quickly obvious... Cadet Chun-li Zhiang, daughter of Dorai, was a mutant.

Which, of course, the Ministry didn't have any trouble with. At least not at the time. Her mutation actually made her a perfect candidate to join her father's special task force working in joint operations with Interpol against a very specific and dangerous criminal organization known as Shadowloo. Things were starting to swing in their favor (largely thank to the help of Chun-li's former martial arts instructor, a former assassin, and his connections in the underground) and even Shadowloo's many mutant enforcers seemed to fall easily the Chun-li. The fire had been lit under Shadowloo, and now the Zhiangs were simply waiting for it to smoke out the rats... However, they gravely underestimated the power of Shadowloo, and soon enough Chun-li and the rest of the team found themselves isolated from he father after he received key information that would bring the hammer down on the operation. Forced to face off against thirteen genetically modified mutant assassins under the strict command of Shadowloo's leader by himself... Dorai was eventually killed, taking his case breaking lead with him. The investigation stalled. The situation neutralized. Chun-li was left with nothing but a hole in her heart and nothing to direct her rage and frustration at.

With the blessing of the Ministry, Chun-li eventually was transferred to Interpol and continued her pursuit of Shadowloo while working on other cases. She soon began to develop an incredibly reputation, and both Interpol and the Chinese government saw Chun-li as not just an excellent police officer, but also an extraordinary tool for public relations. Taking their cue from other heroes used as PR or propaganda, Chun-li was thrust into the public eye as a 'super cop', a police supported super hero who took down criminals and protected the innocent. And feeling it carried on he father's spirit of justice, Chun-li gladly accepted the role, even if she wasn't super fond of being a public figure. Seeing the way it put smiles on the faces of children, especially, touched her and convinced her she was doing good work.

However... global tensions between humans and mutants increased. More and more, it was becoming difficult to have a mutant as a representative of Interpol, and even her home country had incidents of violence breaking out in mutant sectors of large cities. Interpol made it clear that Chun-li's active duties would need to come to an end for the foreseeable future. Her superiors were saddened, as she was an incredible asset to Interpol and any operation she was assigned to, but there was just too much pressure in too many directions. She was offered a desk job at the Interpol headquarters in Lyon, France... though France's own political turmoil over mutant issues made it better for her to simply stay in Beijing and do basically... nothing.

Chun-li couldn't abide by this. She could not sit back idly while the world was starting to fall apart at the seams due to the breakdown of mutant/human relations. And, thankfully, she didn't have to. She was approached by one of her superiors and a wheelchair bound man she's only ever read about before. It was Charles Xavier, offering her a place at his school. Not as a teacher, not as an X-man, as he knew she wouldn't accept either. Instead, he gave her a purpose he knew well she cared about. Caring for young mutants, disenfranchised, who needed guidance and training in order to fight for a sense of justice that Chun-li held so dear. How could she turn it down? Maybe this, more than anything else she had done, would carry on the spirit of her father. And maybe, just maybe, it might cross her path once more with Shadowloo... Who knew?
